Potassium acetate is used in place of magnesium chloride and calcium chloride to remove ice and prevent its formation, that is, as a deicer.

Potassium acetate is an approved food preservative, food additive, and acidity regulator approved for its usage.

It is also used in the field of medicine for the treatment of diabetic ketoacidosis as a part of electrolyte replacement protocol.
